Now You Can Recycles Those Unwanted Electronics
Residents of the Town of Siler City can drop off old and unwanted electronics for recycling at the License Plate Agency Parking Lot on Sat., Oct. 22 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The drop-off site is located at City Hall on East 3rd Street in Siler City.
Electronics that will be accepted include desktop computers, monitors, laptops, telecom equipment, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, televisions, computer peripherals, cell phones, small appliances (such as vacuums, power tools, coffee makers, hair dryers), cable and satellite boxes, gaming systems, keyboards, VCRs and DVD players.
Unacceptable items are smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, thermostats with mercury, and appliances with refrigeration (such as refrigerators, air conditioners and dehumidifiers).
The event is a joint effort of the Town of Siler City, Waste Management, and Synergy Recycling. The materials collected will be transported to a facility where they will be shredded and mechanically separated into commodity grade components to be recycled.
According to Synergy Recycling, electronic equipment represents 1-4% of our nation’s municipal solid waste disposal and is a growing concern as our country’s fastest growing waste/recycling stream.
The Town of Siler City and Waste Management are coordinating the event to comply with the recent ban of electronics from landfills in N. C., effective July 1, 2011.
“If you are like me, you have old electronics stashed in the attic and in your closets, not knowing exactly how to get rid of them properly. We are excited to hold this event, giving you the opportunity to recycle unwanted electronic equipment in an environmentally sound manner,” said Town Manager Bryan Thompson.
